Alley, Williams, Carmen and King’s Architectural Department has provided Architectural services to clients throughout North Carolina and Virginia since 1960. AWCK is able to provide comprehensive architectural planning and design services for both public and private work. Our in-house staff of architects and designers is complemented by our internal civil engineering staff as well as trusted consultants providing structural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, communications, fire alarm and fire protection system design.
AWCK’s Architecture’s core service is municipal and local governmental work. Projects designed by our firm include schools (K-12 and higher education), town halls, municipal office buildings, fire stations, police stations, public parks, recreation centers, libraries and public works facilities. We also provide design services for the private sector, and provide pre-design and post-design services, including master planning, existing facilities analysis and code compliance review, contractor pre-qualification and selection, construction administration, and building inspection.
Master Planning
Our master planning services on both public and private work extends from site evaluation on new and existing sites, existing facilities analysis, including life safety and accessibility code reviews, and preliminary design, conceptual designs, and preliminary construction and operations cost estimates.
Existing Facilities Analysis
This service includes reviewing existing buildings relative to their viability for continued use or adaptive renewal into a new use. Analysis typically includes life safety and accessibility code review, examination of condition, and expected lifespan of building envelope, structural, mechanical and electrical systems, and environmental concerns. We can provide construction cost estimates and comparisons of costs for renovation versus new construction.
Municipal/Local Governmental
We are able to provide design services from schematic design through construction documents (final drawings and specifications) for public projects of all types and sizes. We have designed town halls and municipal office buildings, fire stations, police stations, public libraries, recreation centers, public works facilities, and correctional facilities.
Educational
We have completed over 50 successful educational projects, including system-wide master plans, new K-12 public elementary and middle schools, new charter schools, new buildings on community college campuses, school additions and renovations, reroofing projects, handicapped accessibility projects and the like. We are CEFPI members and regular participants in CEFPI and NCEFP conferences and training programs on new school facility planning and design.
Private
Our private work includes commercial office buildings, retail buildings, and shopping centers, restaurants, manufacturing and warehouse facilities, churches and ecumenical facilities, and multi-family housing. We have LEED-accredited professionals on staff, and have experience in high performance, energy-efficient design.
Park Design
We have designed numerous recreation and park projects, extending in size from small pocket parks to mid-sized municipal parks to large recreation complexes with multiple athletic fields and indoor recreation centers. We have assisted our municipal clients with applications for NC PARTF grant funding.
Contractor Selection Services
We are well equipped to assist Owners in the selection of builders for their projects, and are well-versed in the multiple methods of contractor selection, from design-build to direct competitive negotiation to traditional design-bid-build. For public work, regulations are very specific as to the processes that must be followed and the notices that must be provided in advertisement, solicitation, receipt, evaluation and award of construction contracts. We are knowledgeable of the applicable rules and procedures, and can assist any Owner in navigating the perils of choosing the right builder for the job.
Construction Administration
We are experienced and qualified in providing full services throughout the construction phases. We provide on-site inspection, review contractor submittals and pay applications, respond to contractor inquiries about project particulars and about possible changes in the work, provide pre-final inspection and final inspections of completed work, and review final close-out documentation for completeness and accuracy.
Building Inspection Services
We have a licensed level III building inspector on staff, and our primary mechanical and electrical consultants are also licensed level III inspectors in their respective trades. We are available to provide plan review and inspection services to municipal and county clients on an “as needed” or project specific basis.
