Town of Swepsonville – Virgina Mills Pump Station Replacement - 2021

Nestled between the City of Mebane and City of Graham, the Town of Swepsonville has experienced significant growth and interest from residential and commercial developers looking to expand their work area along the NC 85/40 corridor. As the developments and developer interest grew, the Town had a need to rebuild their main pump station. The existing station was the pump station for their former waste treatment plant and a new pump station, wetwell and other components would be required in order for the Town to grow. AWCK was selected to perform the survey, design, permitting and construction inspection/administration. AWCK assessed the site to determine the best placement for the new station, while conducting modeling and growth analysis to ensure that the station capacity could be increased to handle additional flows. Our design team had two main challenges, correctly size the station so that future capacity can be achieved while designing a station that will not degrade the existing forcemain that is under the Haw River. A 750 GPM station was selected for the Town, with the ability to increase capacity to 1,400 GPM with additional forcemain upgrades. At the completion of the project, AWCK worked with Town staff and showed them the importance of adding the forcemain upgrade to their CIP, helping better prepare the Town for when additional capacity is needed.
