The Town of Elon had a need to replace the existing 6-inch watermain along E Haggard Ave and increase the system capacity by installing a 12-inch main. AWCK was selected to perform the planning, surveying, design, construction administration and observation. There were two major complexities with this project, the first being working with and around Elon Universities schedule and coordination with NCDOT on conducting the replacement before the roadway’s scheduled paving cycle. AWCK frequently communicated with Elon University to gain more insight into the best time of year to conduct this project while notifying NCDOT of schedule changes and adjustments along the way. AWCK also served as a lesion between the City of Burlington and Town of Elon to facilitate a new master meter being installed, complying with current City of Burlington Specifications. This project spanned approximately 5,000 linear feet, provided new service connections to the 12” watermain and was completed with minor disturbances to residents or the university. During the project, AWCK worked through a variety of challenges with the contractor. Due to the age of the Town’s system and lack of record keeping for private utilities, some existing utilities were discovered during construction which required coordination for quick field adjustments. Overall both the Town of Elon, and the contractor were satisfied with the completed product and the watermain has been in service with since fall of 2024.
