The City of Graham has taken a proactive approach to reduce the amount of galvanized watermains within their system while expanding fire protection where previously it did not exist. All three projects were identified by City staff as high priority due to existing material type, frequency of repairs and improving water quality within those areas. AWCK was selected to design, permit and provide contract and construction administration for these watermain replacements. Our engineering team coordinated with Hazen Engineering to assist in performing fire flow analysis in these areas and provided the design team with critical information for watermain sizing. During this investigative step, it was determined that Cedar St and the surrounding areas would benefit from an 8” watermain, while Ardmore St and Montree Ln would be better served by a 6” watermain. Our engineers created a solution that worked around both public (water, sewer, storm sewer) and private utilities (communications, power, natural gas) while not impacting existing customer’s access to those services. To further facilitate the City’s goal of improving water quality to their customers, the engineering team designed the project so all existing customers were provided with a new water service from the watermain to the water meter. By completing a full watermain replacement and abandoning the existing watermains, City of Graham greatly reduces the probability for undetected water leaks within those project areas.
