City of Mebane – NCDOT Utility Relocation Design, 2016-2024

With the rapid growth that the City of Mebane has experienced, NCDOT has designed and completed several roadway improvement projects in and around the City. Because of AWCK’s familiarity with the City of Mebane’s utility system, the City requested that AWCK work with the NCDOT to design the utility relocation plan. Over the last 10 years, our engineering teams have worked with NCDOT on U-3109 (NC-119 Relocation), U-6013 (NC-119 Widening, south of I-85/40) and I-5711 (Mebane Oaks Rd interchange improvements). These projects included as-built review, survey of existing infrastructure, design of utility relocation in accordance with NCDOT regulations and design parameters, construction observation on the utility installation, and as-built survey of installed infrastructure. All three projects posed significant challenges including coordination of roadway and lane closures, reinstatement of water and sewer services to lessen the impacts felt upon residents and businesses and sizing the infrastructure to allow for future growth. Our engineering team analyzed growth trends, current capacities of the existing infrastructure and worked to create solutions that provided maintainable infrastructure for the City of Mebane.
