Town of Swepsonville – E Main Street Watermain Improvements, 2025

After several years of conducting modeling of the water system and conducting flushing, the Town of Swepsonville decided to invest in the replacement of infrastructure. This investment resulted in the creation of the E Main Street Watermain project. Working in the capacity as the Town’s on-call engineering provider, Alley, Williams, Carmen & King, Inc provided research and insight into rehabilitation methods that would be less invasive than traditional dig and replace projects. After alternative options and construction cost estimates were provided to the Town, Staff decided to advertise a request for qualifications and AWCK was then selected to perform surveying, engineering, permitting and construction inspection/administration services for the Town. Ultimately the Town decided to pursue traditional dig and replace methods given the age of the line that was being replaced, limited work area and the need to replace valves and other fittings that would have to be excavated. At the completion of the project scoping, AWCK performed the survey and our team began the initial design process. Preliminary meetings were held with NCDOT to facilitate permitting and design requirements as this project encroaches within their Right of Way. The completed design consists of approximately 1,400 linear feet of 12” Ductile Iron Watermain, the installation of two new fire hydrants and connecting all existing customers to the new watermain. The design for this project was challenging as the design team navigated around existing gas and telecommunication utilities, while keeping the project within a varying (less than 40 foot) right of way. AWCK has completed all design and permitting requirements and is working with the Town to obtain permanent and temporary easements from adjacent property owners. Construction is anticipated to begin in Summer of 2025 with construction completed in early 2026.
