Town of Haw River – Small Waterline Replacements, 2022-2025

The Town of Haw River’s water system is one that was initially built as an industrial need during the boom of textiles in Alamance County. Since then, the Town has added to the system with residential development driven water projects but has not had the significant industrial investments needed to replace the smaller diameter waterlines. Through strategic planning, AWCK assisted the Town with a funding application to NC Division of Water Infrastructure to replace existing 2” and smaller waterlines with 6” watermains that would provided residents with increased water quality, flow rates and fire protection. When planning the project, AWCK analyzed the current water system and asked for work orders to address waterlines that frequently experienced breaks. After those areas were planned, the engineering team looked at looping watermains where there are currently dead-end waterlines. This procedure greatly improves flow rate and allowed fire protection to areas that are classified as underserved communities in accordance with the NC Environmental Justice dashboard at the time of the application for funding. In total, this project will install approximately 15,000 linear feet of watermain and provide residents with new service connections from the watermain to their meter. The Small Waterline Replacement project is scheduled to be completed by December of 2025 and is the first major water improvement project the Town has completed in over 40 years.
