The Town of Gibsonville operated a pump station and maintains an outfall which was constructed around 1975. The Town noticed that run times on the station were increasing and dramatically so during rain events. AWCK was selected to study the area, conduct field investigations and provide a full evaluation of the Town’s Travis Creek sewershed. Upon performing our investigations, we found substantial amounts of Inflow and Infiltration coming from the Town’s aging downtown infrastructure. Our survey and technical staff conducted smoke testing, mapping and observed videoing of the system in an effort to identify obvious contributors to inflow while assessing the condition of the sewershed as a whole. Once all the data was collected and analyzed, our design team prepared preliminary plans to assist the Town with applying for funding of a rehabilitation project. The Town was awarded $2.3 million from the USDA which included approximately 15,000’ of rehabilitation including CIPP, manhole rehabilitation, and dig and replace sections. Once the Town was selected as a funding recipient, AWCK submitted a Statement of Qualifications and was selected to perform surveying, permitting, easement acquisition, design, and construction observation/administration as well as grant administration. Due to the proximity of the sewer outfall to local streams and wetlands, the design team decided to rehabilitate the entire outfall, while placing watertight and venting manholes where applicable. Once the main outfall was rehabilitated the design team shifted focus to the oldest infrastructure in downtown, which was installed around 1923. The remaining rehabilitation would be conducted on sections of pipe leading to the outfall that required dig and replace methods. This project was designed and permitted in the spring of 2018, to bid in the fall of 2018 and under construction by summer of 2019. Construction was completed in 2020.
