City of Thomasville – Hanks Branch Sewer Rehabilitation – 2020 and 2022

The City of Thomasville had a significant need to rehabilitate or replace its Hanks Branch Sewer outfall due to pipe failures, frequent overflows and large volumes of inflow and infiltration inundating the sewer system. The City contracted with AWCK to perform a sewershed analysis, smoke testing analysis of the outfall and to conduct video inspections of the outfall. AWCK performed the 400 acre sewershed analysis in 2014, conducted other investigations throughout 2015-16 and provided the City with an extensive report of the Hanks Branch outfall. Our field survey crews and technical staff combined to smoke test nearly 38,000 feet of sewer main. AWCK, with the assistance of a subcontractor cleaned 6,000 feet of sewer main and videoed 5,000 feet of the cleaned sections. The report was not only to be used as a capital planning tool, it also provided recommendations to City staff on low cost high impact repairs that could be conducted to assist in reducing the amount of I/I that reaches the outfall. The City then applied for and was awarded state assistance in financing the rehabilitation project. AWCK was selected to conduct field data collection, plan the project, obtain permitting and provide bidding assistance as well as construction observation/administration. To facilitate construction and planning, AWCK asked and was approved by NCDWI to spilt this project into two phases. Phase 1 consisted of 5,000 feet of 15” or 18” sewer rehabilitation including manholes and Phase 2 consisted of nearly 8,400 feet of sewer rehabilitation including some areas of dig and replace. These projects were performed by two sperate contractors from May 2019 through May of 2020 (Phase 1) and from May 2021 through November of 2022 (Phase 2).
